Good IT matters everywhere, even at a certain very busy operation up north. So in the spirit of the season, here is a short tale from the North Pole IT department, and the very real lesson hiding inside it.
For once, Jangle felt calm. The co-manager of the North Pole's IT team scanned his wall of monitors, watching the metrics roll in from every department racing to get ready for the big ride. Toy Assembly was green. Coal Acquisition, green. He refilled the cocoa and settled in.
Then he saw his partner Ginger's brow furrow behind her festive glasses, and he knew. A furrow like that meant a big problem.
A new scheduling tool had gone live that morning for Tinsel's department, and Tinsel was on the line, frustrated. Nothing was broken, exactly. His team just had no idea how to use the thing. Tickets were piling up, work was slowing down, and at the North Pole in late December, slowing down is not an option. The tool was fine. The rollout was the problem. It had gone live without anyone briefing or training the people who had to use it.
Ginger took the call. The new system really was the better choice, she explained, better features and stronger security than the old one. The mistake was launching it cold. So she offered a fix on the spot. Her team would come spend time with Tinsel's department and actually teach them how to get the most out of it. And Jangle, listening in, owned the miss. "I want to apologize for something going live without your team being properly trained. We will not let that happen again."
Tinsel, won over, agreed. Crisis averted, Christmas back on schedule.
Here is the part that is not a fairy tale. The best software in the world fails if you drop it on people with no training. New tools need a real rollout, briefing, training, and someone to call when it gets confusing, or even a great system turns into friction and lost time. Most of the technology problems we get called into are not broken software. They are software nobody was shown how to use.
That is the difference between buying a tool and actually adopting one, and it is a big part of what we handle for the businesses we support.
